Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Balucimyel' (Lucky Yellow) and 'LANZ0041' (Bandana Gold)

Summary: The plants of 'LANZ0040' are wider that those of 'Balucimyel'. The stem of the plants of 'LANZ0040' have medium density pubescence while those of 'Balucimyel' have sparse pubescence. The leaf blade of 'LANZ0040' is medium green and larger that that of 'LANZ0041', which is dark green. When newly opened, the inner side of the corolla of the flower of 'LANZ0040' is medium yellow while that of 'LANZ0041' is dark yellow. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla of the flower of 'LANZ0040' is dark yellow while that of 'Balucimyel' is medium yellow orange.

INFLORESCENCE: located in axillary position, domed shape in profile, contains flowers of one colour
COROLLA (INNER SIDE): medium yellow (closest to RHS 9A) when newly opened, dark yellow (closest to RHS 14A) when fully opened, yellow to orange eye
COROLLA LOBES: arrangement is touching, obtuse apex, incurved along longitudinal axis, medium degree of undulation of margin

Origin & Breeding History: 'LANZ0040' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent, a proprietary breeding line designated 'H0030-1', and the male parent variety 'LANZ0032' in August 2016 in Gilroy, California, U.S.A.. The resulting seed was sown in December 2016, from which a single unique seedling was selected in April 2017 based on its plant growth habit and vigour, flower colour, length of flowering season and foliage colour.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'LANZ0040' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2023 at BioFlora, Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each per variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2023. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety on June 14, 2023. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
