Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Anouk'

Summary: The plants of 'Green Summer' are small to medium in size whereas the plants of 'Anouk' are medium to large. 'Green Summer' has a shorter flowering stem than the flowering stem of 'Anouk'. The main colour of the fertile bract of 'Green Summer' is green and violet whereas the fertile bract of 'Anouk' is green and red purple. The main colour of the infertile bract of 'Green Summer' is lighter violet than the infertile bract of 'Anouk'.

Description:

PLANT: upright to bushy growth habit, small to medium size, erect outer flowering stems, medium to dense, weak to medium green and grey foliage, late flowering

LEAF: no margin incisions

FLOWERING STEM: medium thickness, light green, sparse pubescence, no lateral branching
SPIKE: medium conical to truncate conical shape, medium amount of flowers
CALYX: greenish, sparse to medium pubescence
FERTILE BRACT: green and violet
INFERTILE BRACT: oblanceolate to obovate, violet (RHS N81C), medium undulation of the margin
COROLLA: dark blue

Origin & Breeding History: 'Green Summer' originated from an open pollination of the Lavandula stoechas variety 'Avenue'. The breeding was carried out in the summer of 2006 in greenhouses in Odense, Denmark. The resultant seed was grown out and selected in 2009. 'Green Summer' was selected for its growth habit and floral traits.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Green Summer' was conducted in a greenhouse during the summer of 2016 in Surrey, British Columbia. The trial included a total of 13 plants of 'Green Summer' and 15 plants of 'Anouk'. All plants were grown in 15 cm diameter pots spaced 45 cm apart. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, in August 2016. All colour measurements were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
