PLANT: erect growth habit
STEM: herbaceous, light green to medium green, very dense pubescence
LEAF: alternate arrangement
LEAF BLADE: lanceolate shape, dark green (RHS N138A) on upper side, medium brown green on lower side, medium concave shape in cross-section, straight to very weakly recurved shape in longitudinal section, entire margin, acute apex, very dense pubescence
INFLORESCENCE: panicle type
FLOWER: rhomboid shape, inner side dark brown purple (RHS 183C)
Origin & Breeding History: 'Ha Ha Tonka' was discovered as a chance seedling that originated from an open pollination that occurred in the summer of 2015 in Weinheim, Germany between the female parent thought to be an unnamed proprietary seedling of Schizachyrium scoparium and an unknown male parent. In September 2016, 'Ha Ha Tonka' was selected as a unique single seedling for its plant growth habit, leaf pubescence and leaf colour. 'Ha Ha Tonka' was first asexually reproduced through plant division in September 2016 in Weinheim, Germany.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Ha Ha Tonka' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2017/3319, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands in 2019. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
