Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Maxim', 'CDC Redberry' and 'CDC Dazil'
Summary: 'CDC Redmoon' has more pairs of leaflets per leaf than 'CDC Redberry'. At maturity, the pods of 'CDC Redmoon' are longer than those of 'CDC Dazil'. In profile, the seed of 'CDC Redmoon' is broad elliptic in longitudinal cross section whereas that of 'CDC Redberry' and 'CDC Dazil' is elliptic. The seed testa of 'CDC Redmoon' has one colour whereas that of 'CDC Dazil' has two. 'CDC Redmoon' is not tolerant to imidizolinone herbicides whereas 'CDC Maxim' is tolerant.
Description:
PLANT: late maturing
STEM: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF: elliptic, rudimentary to prominent tendrils
FLOWER: flowers mid-season, medium to large, white standard with very light violet stripes, white wings
POD: mainly two ovules per pod, no anthocyanin colouration, yellow at maturity, truncate apex
DRY SEED: very narrow to narrow width, elliptic profile in longitudinal cross-section, one colour of testa, grey testa, orange cotyledon, dull brown hilum
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Redmoon' (experimental designation 3646-4) was developed from the cross MP20 / 1664s-4 // 'CDC Redberry' carried out in 2005 at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Selections were made in the F3 to F8 generations, where 25 sub-lines were used to establish the breeder seed. Throughout the generations, selections were based on yield, seed weight, seed size (including diameter and plumpness), seed coat colour, cotyledon colour, days to flowering, days to maturity, resistance to lodging, plant height and disease resistance. 'CDC Redmoon' was entered in and evaluated as 3646-4 in the Pulse and Special Crops Cooperative Registration Tests in 2011 and 2012.
Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'CDC Redmoon' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the summers of 2014 and 2015. The trials were conducted using a RCB Design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 95 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
