Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Maxim', 'CDC Redberry' and 'CDC Dazil'

Summary: At the first flowering node, '4371-4' has a greater number of leaflets than the reference varieties. The seed of '4371-4' is one colour whereas the seed of 'CDC Dazil' is two colours. '4371-4' has seed with no patterning of the testa whereas the seed of 'CDC Dazil' has marbled patterning of the testa.

Description:

PLANT: erect growth habit, matures mid-season

STEM: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: elliptic shape, prominent tendrils at first flowering

FLOWER: flowers mid-season, medium size, white standard with light violet stripes
POD: mainly two ovules, yellow at maturity, truncate shaped apex
DRY SEED: orange cotyledon, very narrow to narrow, elliptic in longitudinal cross-section, grey testa, no patterning of testa, dull brown hilum

USE: human consumption

Origin & Breeding History: '4371-4' originated from the cross 'US4'/'CDC Redberry' by '3352D' conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2006. Selection criteria was based on yield, seed weight, seed size, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging, plant height, and disease resistance. Selections were made during the F3 to F8 generations. Sixteen sub-lines were created from the F8 generation and subsequently used to establish breeder seed.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for '4371-4' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the summers of 2014 and 2016. The trials were conducted using a RCB Design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 95 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
