Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Maxim', 'CDC Redberry' and 'CDC Dazil'
Summary: At maturity, the plants of 'CDC Carmine' are shorter than those of 'CDC Maxim' and 'CDC Redberry'. The seed weight for 'CDC Carmine' is less than that of 'CDC Redberry' and greater than that of 'CDC Dazil'. The seed of 'CDC Carmine' has one colour with no pattern whereas the seed of 'CDC Dazil' has two colours with a marbled patterning on the testa for 5% of the seed. 'CDC Carmine' is not tolerant to imidizolinone herbicide whereas 'CDC Maxim' is tolerant.

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Carmine' (experimental designation 3674-15) originated from the cross 'CDC Viceroy' / 1439s-3 // 'CDC Redberry' conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2005. Selection criteria was based on yield, seed weight, seed size, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging resistance, plant height, and disease resistance. Selections were made during the F3 to F8 generations. Sixteen sub-lines were created from the F8 generation and subsequently used to establish breeder seed.
Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'CDC Carmine' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2016 and 2018 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a RCB Design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 94 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except seed weight which was based on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
