Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC QG-2' and 'CDC Peridot'

Summary: The colour of the cotyledon for 'CDC QG-4' is green while that of 'CDC Peridot' is greenish yellow. At maturity, the plants of 'CDC QG-4' are taller than those of 'CDC QG-2'. The pod, excluding the beak, of 'CDC QG-4' is shorter than the pod of 'CDC Peridot'. The plants of 'CDC QG-4' mature later than those of both reference varieties. The seed weight for 'CDC QG-4' is less than that of 'CDC Peridot'.

Description:

PLANT: matures mid-season

STEM: no anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: elliptic

FLOWER: flowers mid-season, medium size, white standard with medium violet stripes

POD: mainly two ovules, yellow at maturity, truncate shaped apex
DRY SEED: green cotyledon, very narrow to narrow, elliptic in longitudinal cross-section, green with dark green marbling on testa, dull brown hilum

USE: human consumption

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC QG-4' (experimental designation IBC839) originated from the cross between 'CDC QG-3' and 'CDC QG-2' conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2010. Selection criteria was based on yield, seed weight, seed size, seed coat colour, cotyledon colour, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging resistance, plant height, and disease resistance. Selections were made during the F1 to F4 generations. Twenty-five sub-lines were created from the F2 derived F5 seed and subsequently used to establish breeder seed.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'CDC QG-4' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2016 and 2018 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a RCB Design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 94 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except seed weight which was based on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
