Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Maxim' and 'CDC SB-2'

Summary: The cotyledon for 'CDC SB-4' is yellow whereas that of 'CDC Maxim' is orange. The plants of 'CDC SB-4' flower later than the plants of 'CDC Maxim' and 'CDC SB-2'. The flower of 'CDC SB-4' is purple whereas that of 'CDC Maxim' is white. The seed testa of 'CDC SB-4' is grey with a grey spotted pattern while the seed testa of 'CDC Maxim' is grey with no pattern.

Description:

PLANT: matures mid-season

STEM: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: elliptic

FLOWER: flowers mid-season, medium size, purple standard with light to medium violet stripes

POD: one or two ovules, yellow at maturity, truncate shaped apex
DRY SEED: yellow cotyledon, narrow, broad elliptic in longitudinal cross-section, grey with grey spotted pattern on testa, dull brown hilum

USE: human consumption

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC SB-4' (experimental designation IBC929) originated from a cross between 3674-17 and 'CDC SB-3', which was then further backcrossed to 3674-17 two times. The crosses were conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with the final cross conducted in 2011. Selection criteria was based on yield, seed weight, seed size, seed coat colour, cotyledon colour, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging resistance, plant height, herbicide tolerance and disease resistance. Selections were made during the F1 to F4 generations. Seven sub-lines were created from the F2 derived F5 seed and subsequently used to establish breeder seed.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'CDC SB-4' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2016 and 2018 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a RCB Design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 94 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
