Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Maxim' and 'CDC Redberry'

Summary: At the first flowering node the leaf of 'CDC Karim' has a greater number of leaflet pairs than that of 'CDC Maxim' and 'CDC Redberry'. In longitudinal cross-section, the seed of 'CDC Karim' is elliptic whereas it is broad elliptic for 'CDC Maxim' and 'CDC Redberry'. The seed weight of 'CDC Karim' is less than that of both reference varieties. The plants of 'CDC Karim' are tolerant to imidazolinone herbicide whereas the plants of 'CDC Redberry' are not tolerant.

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Karim' (experimental designation IBC 929R) originated from the cross between 3674-17 and 'CDC SB-3' with 3 additional backcrosses to 3674-17. The final cross was conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2011. Selections were made during the F1 to F4 generations based on yield, seed weight, seed size, seed coat colour, cotyledon colour, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging resistance, plant height and disease resistance. One sub-line was selected from the F4 generation and subsequently used to establish breeder seed.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Karim' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a RCB Design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 94 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except seed weight which was based on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test. Data to support Imidazolinone tolerances was provided by BASF Inc. in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
