Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Impower', 'CDC Greenstar' and 'CDC Lima'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the stem of 'CDC Grimm' is weak to medium whereas the anthocyanin colouration is absent on the stem of 'CDC Impower'. The plants of 'CDC Grimm' are taller than the plants of 'CDC Lima'. The plants of 'CDC Grimm' mature earlier than the plants of 'CDC Impower'. The seed weight of 'CDC Grimm' is greater than that of 'CDC Impower' and 'CDC Lima'. The plants of 'CDC Grimm' are tolerant to imidazolinone herbicides whereas the plants of 'CDC Greenstar' are not tolerant to imidazolinone herbicides.

Description:

COTYLEDON: yellow

STEM: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: elliptic

FLOWER: medium size, white standard with weak violet stripes, violet stripes absent on wings

POD: mainly one ovule, yellow at maturity, truncate shaped apex
DRY SEED: broad, broad elliptic in longitudinal cross-section, greenish yellow, dull brown hilum

USE: human consumption

CHEMICAL REACTION: tolerant to imidazolinone herbicides

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Grimm' (experimental designation IBC1199) originated from the cross between IBC1109 and IBC1006 conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2013. During the F1 to F4 generations, selections were made based on yield, seed weight, seed size, seed coat colour, cotyledon colour, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging resistance, plant height and disease resistance. Seed from seven F4 sub-lines was bulked to establish breeder seed in 2017.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Grimm' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2020 and 2021. The trials were conducted using a RCB design consisting of 2 replications per variety. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 94 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for seed weight which was based on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values. Herbicide tolerance was assessed by BASF Inc. in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in a controlled environment in the winter of 2020. The herbicide tolerance was evaluated by spraying plants at the 6 to 8 node stage with 0, 1, 2 and 4 times the recommended application rates for two separate imidazolinone herbicide treatment types. The first herbicide treatment was Solo ADV (0, 20, 40, and 80 grams active ingredient per hectare) and the second herbicide treatment was a combination of Odyssey (0, 30, 60, and 120 grams active ingredient per hectare) with Merge (0, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% volume by volume), respectively. The Canadian Weed Science Society 0-100 Rating Scale for Herbicide Efficacy and Crop Phytotoxicity Herbicide was used to assess the plant injury. The plant injury ratings for herbicide tolerance traits were assessed visually 14, 21 and 28 days after treatment with plant chlorosis, stunting, and overall biomass being compared against untreated control plants.
