Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Sublime' and 'CDC Maxim'
Summary: The leaflet length of CDC Imani' is longer than that of both reference varieties. The dry seed weight of CDC Imani' is less than that of CDC Sublime' and greater than that of CDC Maxim'. The plants of CDC Imani' flower later than those of CDC Maxim'. The plants of CDC Imani' mature later than those of CDC Sublime'.
Description:
COTYLEDON: orange
PLANT: flowers early to mid-season, matures mid-season
STEM: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF: elliptic, medium length and width, medium number of pairs of leaflets
FLOWER: small to medium size, white standard with weak violet stripes, violet stripes absent on wings
POD: mainly two ovules, yellow at maturity, medium length, truncate shaped apex
DRY SEED: very narrow to narrow, broad elliptic profile in longitudinal cross section, yellowish green testa with no patterning, dull brown hilum
USE: human consumption
Origin & Breeding History: CDC Imani' (experimental designation 6935-3) originated from the cross between 3969-104' and IBC 1127-1' conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2014. A single plant selection was made from the F2 generation with further selections made at the F3 generation based on yield, seed weight, seed size, seed colour, cotyledon colour, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging resistance, plant height which includes diameter and plumpness, and disease resistance. Seed from 32 F11 sub-lines was bulked to establish Breeder seed in 2024.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for CDC Imani' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2023 and 2024. The trials were conducted using a RCB design consisting of 2 replications per variety in 2023 and 3 replications per variety in 2024. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 94 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety in 2023 and 30 measurements in 2024, except for seed weight which was based on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety in 2023 and 12 measurements in 2024. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
