Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC KR-2' and 'CDC Monarch'

Summary: The plants of ‘CDC Imu' are taller than those of ‘CDC KR-2'. The leaflet of ‘CDC Imu' is shorter than that of ‘CDC Monarch'. At maturity, the pod of ‘CDC Imu' is shorter than that of ‘CDC Monarch'. The dry seed weight of ‘CDC Imu' is less than that of both reference varieties.

Description:

COTYLEDON: orange

PLANT: flowers early to mid-season, matures mid to late season

STEM: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: elliptic, medium length and width, medium number of pairs of leaflets

FLOWER: medium size, white standard with weak violet stripes, violet stripes absent on wings

POD: mainly two ovules, yellow at maturity, medium length, truncate shaped apex
DRY SEED: narrow, broad elliptic profile in longitudinal cross section, grey testa with no patterning, dull brown hilum

USE: human consumption

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CDC Imu' (experimental designation 7005-3) originated from the cross between 4472-4 and IBC 1117-3 conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2014. A single plant selection was made from the F2 generation with further selections made at the F3 generation based on yield, seed weight, seed size, seed colour, cotyledon colour, days to flower, days to maturity, lodging resistance, plant height which includes diameter and plumpness, and disease resistance. Breeder seed was established in 2022 at the F9 generation using 17 sub-lines.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘CDC Imu' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2022 and 2024. The trials were conducted using a RCB design consisting of 2 replications per variety in 2022 and 3 replications per variety in 2024. Each replicate consisted of 3 rows spaced 30 cm apart, with a row length of 3.66 metres and a planting density of 94 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety in 2022 and 30 measurements in 2024, except for seed weight which was on a minimum of 8 measurements per variety in 2022 and 12 measurements in 2024. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
