Origin & Breeding History: 'Clearwater' (experimental designation 'E01K.30358') originated from a cross conducted in June of 2011 in the greenhouses of Enza Zaden Recherche France, in Allonnes, between the variety 'Bolsachica (EZ)', as the female parent, and Enza breeding line 'F56923', as the male parent. The resulting F1 seeds were planted in the greenhouses in July of 2011. The F2 seeds were collected and bulked in September of 2011. From 2011 to 2014, successive generations were grown, selections were conducted at the young plant stage and harvested at Enza Zaden Recherche in Allonnes. The criteria used for making selections at each generation were leaf colour, leaf thickness and leaf shape for baby leaf production, combined with resistance to Downy mildew (Bremia lactucae) and Lettuce mosaic virus (LMV) strain Ls-1. In 2014, the line of F5 seedlings that showed the best uniformity, colour and leaf type was evaluated in different direct sowing baby leaf trials. A decision was taken to advance this line for further trialing and the line that was the most uniform later became known as 'Clearwater'.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Clearwater' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number SLA3714, purchased from Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands. The trial was conducted by Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands in 2017.
