Summary: The plant of 'Caravel' is larger in diameter than the plant of 'Yacht'. The leaf blade of 'Caravel' is dark green while that of 'Yacht' is medium to dark green.
Description:
PLANT: multileaf Batavia type, open type culture, small diameter, absent or weak degree to overlapping of upper part of leaves, many leaves, no head formation, absent or very weak axillary sprouting, begins bolting very late under long day conditions, very strong intensity of fasciation at flowering stage
LEAF: thin, semi-erect attitude at harvest maturity, absent or very few divisions, obovate shape, rounded tip, flat in longitudinal section, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, dark green, weak glossiness of upper side, very weak to weak blistering, very small to small blisters
LEAF BLADE: medium to strong undulation of margin, venation is flabellate
INCISIONS OF MARGIN ON APICAL PART OF LEAF: very shallow to shallow, very shallow secondary incisions of margin, medium density, irregularly dentate

Origin & Breeding History: 'Caravel' (experimental designation 79-530 RZ) originated from a cross conducted in the summer of 2009 in Fijnaart, Netherlands. The criteria used for making selections were dark green leaf colour and vigour, combined with resistance to Downy mildew (Bremia lactucae) and Lettuce mosaic virus (LMV-1). The variety was stable after 8 generations and it later became known as 'Caravel'.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Caravel' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number SLA3821, purchased from the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands. The trial was conducted by the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands in 2018.
