Summary: The plants of 'Alyssa' have a weak to medium degree of overlapping of the upper part of the leaves whereas the plants of 'Sintia' have a medium degree of overlapping of the upper part of the leaves. The leaf of 'Alyssa' is medium green but lighter than that of 'Sintia', which is also medium green. 'Alyssa' has a weak to medium degree of blistering on the leaf whereas it is weak on the leaf of 'Sintia'.
Description:
PLANT: butterhead type, in glasshouse culture, medium diameter, weak to medium degree of overlapping of upper part of leaves, absent or very weak axillary sprouting, begins bolting very late, absent or very weak intensity of fasciation at flowering stage, mid-season harvest maturity
HEAD: medium sized, circular shape in longitudinal section, medium density
LEAF: medium thickness, semi-erect attitude, absent or very few divisions, narrow oblate to circular shape, rounded tip, flat in longitudinal section, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium intensity of green colour, weak glossiness on upper side, weak to medium degree of blistering, medium size of blisters
LEAF BLADE: absent or very weak undulation of margin, venation not flabellate

Origin & Breeding History: 'Alyssa' (breeder's reference 42-174 RZ) originated from a controlled cross conducted between two proprietary lines made in October 2009 in Fijnaart, the Netherlands. The criteria used for making selections were resistance to Downy mildew (Bremia lactucae), lack of tipburn symptoms and slow bolting time. The variety was stable after 9 generations and identified in November 2018. It later became known as 'Alyssa'.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Alyssa' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number SLA4354, purchased from the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands. The trial was conducted by the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands in 2020.
