Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Scamander'

Summary: The leaf of 'Sungari' is thick whereas that of 'Scamander' is very thick. The blistering on the leaves of 'Sungari' is of a medium degree whereas that of 'Scamander' is weak. The leaf margin incisions of 'Sungari' are medium to dense while those of 'Scamander' are dense to very dense. The seed coat colour of 'Sungari' is white whereas it is black for 'Scamander'.

Description:

PLANT: frillice type, glasshouse and open culture type, small to medium sized diameter, absent or weak degree of overlapping of upper part of leaves, medium number of leaves, late to very late bolting, absent or weak axillary sprouting, absent or very weak fasciation on bolting stem

LEAF: semi-erect attitude at harvest maturity, absent or very few divisions, broad to circular obtrullate shape, rounded tip, flat in longitudinal section, very strong intensity of large area of reddish to purplish anthocyanin colouration, strong glossiness on upper side, thick, medium degree of blistering, small blisters, medium to strong undulation of margin, semi-flabellate venation
LEAF MARGIN INCISIONS: bidentate type, shallow to medium depth, medium to dense, very shallow to shallow secondary incisions

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sungari' (breeder's reference 44-CL5535 RZ) originated from a cross between two proprietary parent lines conducted in the Netherlands in the summer of 2017. The final selection of 'Sungari' was made in De Lier, Netherlands in the summer of 2021 based on disease resistance and leaf colour. The variety was stable after 7 generations of pedigree selection.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Sungari' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number SLA4872, purchased from the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands. The trial was conducted by the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands in 2023.
