Variety used for comparison: 'Business'

Summary: The plants of ‘BESMA' have no resistance to Bremia lactucae isolate Bl: 16EU whereas the plants of ‘Business' have this resistance present.

Description:

PLANT: iceberg type, in the open culture type, medium sized diameter, strong degree of overlapping of upper part of leaves, mid season harvest maturity, very late time of beginning of bolting, absent or weak axillary sprouting, absent or very weak fasciation on bolting stem

HEAD: small to medium sized, circular in cross section, very dense

LEAF: semi-erect attitude, absent or very few divisions, circular shape, rounded tip, flat in longitudinal section, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium green, weak glossiness of upper side, thick, weak blistering, small blisters, flabellate venation
LEAF BLADE MARGIN: weak undulation, irregularly dentate incisions, medium depth primary incisions, shallow secondary incisions, medium density incisions

SEED: black

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistance to Nasonovia ribisnigri biotype Nr: 0 present; resistance to Bremia lactucae isolates Bl: 16EU, Bl: 29EU, Bl: 33EU, Bl: 35EU, Bl: 36EU and Lettuce mosaic virus pathotype II absent

Origin & Breeding History: ‘BESMA' (experimental designation 45-IC5928 RZ) originated from a controlled backcross conducted in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec in 2015. The final backcross BC3, was conducted in the summer of 2016 and was followed by pedigree selection for speed of bolting and disease resistance. The final selection of ‘BESMA' was made in the summer of 2020.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘BESMA' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number SLA4821, purchased from the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands. The trial was conducted by the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands in 2023.
