Variety used for comparison: 'Royal Ruby'

Summary: The length of the leaf blade of 'OPSTAL50' is shorter than the leaf blade of 'Royal Ruby'. The upper side of the young leaf blade of 'OPSTAL50' is brown green with very strong intensity of red purple anthocyanin colouration whereas the young leaf blade of 'Royal Ruby' is brown green with medium to strong intensity of red to red purple anthocyanin colouration.

Description:

PLANT: erect attitude

STEM: light green with red brown flush, medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration

PETIOLE: red, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
YOUNG LEAF BLADE: upper side is brown green (RHS N137B) with very strong intensity of red purple anthocyanin colouration throughout blade, lower side is light green with medium to strong intensity of red purple anthocyanin colouration
LEAF BLADE: upper side is brown green (RHS N137B) throughout blade, lower side is light green, ovate shape, acuminate apex, attenuate base, no bulging, weakly recurved along longitudinal axis

Origin & Breeding History: 'OPSTAL50' was discovered and developed by the breeder, Ron Van Opstal, owner of Ron Van Opstal Holding B.V. in Zundert, Netherlands. It was discovered in May 2008, as a naturally occurring branch mutation of the Leucothoe keiskei variety 'Royal Ruby' which was growing in a container in Zundert. 'OPSTAL50' was selected in 2009 for its leaf appearance and leaf colour that changes throughout the growing season. 'OPSTAL50' was first propagated asexually by stem cuttings in January 2009, in Zundert, Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'OPSTAL50' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2013/1363, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Naktuinbouw - Variety Center in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands, in 2014. The colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
