Wood, an employee of Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA in May 2004. 'SMSYPRZ1' was selected in May of 2007 based on flower colour and re-blooming. Further asexual reproduction of the variety 'SMSYPRZ1' was conducted in June 2007 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMSYPRZ1' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2018 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 shrubs each of the candidate and reference variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 7.6 litre containers on July 26, 2017. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on April 28, 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
