Variety used for comparison: 'Oliver de Serres'
Summary: The flower bud of ‘SMNSHBBL' is light violet whereas that of ‘Oliver de Serres' is dark blue pink. The flowers of ‘SMNSHBBL' have a medium number of corolla lobes whereas those of ‘Oliver de Serres' have medium to many corolla lobes. The corolla lobe of ‘SMNSHBBL' has absent or very weak incurving of the margin whereas that of ‘Oliver de Serres' has a weak incurving of the margin.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘SMNSHBBL' originated as a mutation made by irradiating seed of an unnamed proprietary selection in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA in 2007. The new variety ‘SMNSHBBL' was selected in 2007 based on panicle size, flower colour, flower fragrance and disease resistance. Asexual reproduction by softwood cuttings was first conducted in 2011.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘SMNSHBBL' is based on the UPOV Report of Technical Examination, application number 20212289, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hannover, Germany in 2023 and 2024. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
