Variety used for comparison: 'Miss Kim'

Summary: The plants of 'SMNSDTP' have sparse to medium density branching and are shorter than those of ‘Miss Kim', which have dense branching. The one-year-old shoot of 'SMNSDTP' is grey brown while that of ‘Miss Kim' is medium brown. The leaf blade of 'SMNSDTP' is medium ovate in shape and longer than that of ‘Miss Kim', which is broad ovate in shape. The outer side of the flower bud of 'SMNSDTP' is dark blue pink while that of ‘Miss Kim' is light violet and white. The inflorescence of 'SMNSDTP' has dense flowers and is shorter than that of ‘Miss Kim', which has a medium density of flowers. The flower fragrance of 'SMNSDTP' is strong while it is of medium strength for that of ‘Miss Kim'. The flower of 'SMNSDTP' is smaller in diameter than that of ‘Miss Kim'. The corolla lobe of 'SMNSDTP' has a semi-erect attitude with an acute shaped apex while that of ‘Miss Kim' has a horizontal to recurved attitude with an acuminate shaped apex. The outer side of the corolla tube of 'SMNSDTP' is light violet while that of ‘Miss Kim' is light blue pink.

Origin & Breeding History: 'SMNSDTP' originated as an open pollinated cross that occurred between the female parent, an unnamed selection of Syringa pubescens subsp. patula, and an unknown male parent in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA in the spring of 2005. 'SMNSDTP' was selected in May 2007 based on its compact dwarf plant growth habit, flower colour and fragrance. 'SMNSDTP' was first asexually propagated by softwood cuttings in June 2007 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMNSDTP' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2024 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 8 shrubs of the candidate variety and 16 plants of the reference variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 8.8 litre containers in the summer of 2022. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on May 2, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
