Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Lobetis' (Laguna Compact Blue with Eye)

Summary: The shoot of 'KLELE12094' is dark green with medium density of pubescence whereas the shoot of 'Lobetis' is light green with absent or very sparse pubescence. The leaf of 'KLELE12094' is narrower and narrow elliptic in shape whereas the leaf of 'Lobetis' is obovate in shape. The shape of the apex of the leaf blade of 'KLELE12094' is acute whereas the apex of the leaf blade of 'Lobetis' is mucronate. The upper side of the leaf blade of 'KLELE12094' has medium density of pubescence whereas the leaf blade of 'Lobetis' has absent or very sparse pubescence. The corolla of 'KLELE12094' is longer with a broader lower lip than the corolla of 'Lobetis'. The middle lobe of the lower lip of the corolla of 'KLELE12094' is broader than that of 'Lobetis'. The white zone on the inner side of the lower lip of the corolla of 'KLELE12094' is medium size whereas the white zone on the lower lip of the corolla of 'Lobetis' is large.

COROLLA TUBE: outer side is violet blue (RHS 96C)

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLELE12094' was bred and developed by the breeder, Guido von Tubeuf. It originated from an open pollinated cross that occurred in September 2008, in Nairobi, Kenya, between a Lobelia designated 'LE080067', as the female parent, and an unknown male parent. From the resulting progeny, seedlings were selected for their flower colour, earliness of flowering, plant vigour and growth habit. These selected seedlings were evaluated in greenhouse trials from February to May 2010, 2011, and 2012, in Stuttgart, Germany, where they were further assessed for earliness of flowering, flower colour, plant uniformity, plant vigour and growth habit. In May 2011, in Stuttgart, Germany, 'KLELE12094' was selected for commercialization.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'KLELE12094' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings that were each transplanted into an 11.5 cm pot on April 13, 2015. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of the candidate variety on May 20, 2015, and from 10 plants or parts of plants of the reference variety on June 1, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
