Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'KLELE10724' ((Old) Magadi Basket Dark Blue) and 'Tech Darbule' (Techno Heat Dark Blue)

Summary: The plants of 'KLELE12095' are shorter with a shorter shoot than the plants of 'KLELE10724' and 'Tech Darbule'. The shoot of 'KLELE12095' is of medium thickness whereas the shoot of 'Tech Darbule' is very thick. The leaf of 'KLELE12095' is smaller than the leaf of 'KLELE10724'. The upper side of the leaf blade of 'KLELE12095' has absent or very sparse pubescence whereas the leaf blade of 'Tech Darbule' has dense pubescence. The corolla of 'KLELE12095' is shorter than the corolla of 'Tech Darbule'. The upper side of the lower lip of the corolla of 'KLELE12095' has a very small white zone whereas the lower lip of the corolla of 'KLELE10724' has a medium size white zone.

UPPER LIP OF COROLLA: shape of lobes is elliptic, main colour of inner side is violet blue (RHS N89A)
LOWER LIP OF COROLLA: main colour of inner side is violet blue (brighter and more blue than RHS N89B), very small white zone on inner side, shape of white zone on inner side is elongated and rounded, medium size markings on inner side, main colour of outer side is blue violet (RHS N89D) with light violet blue (RHS 97D) blotch at base, arrangement of lobes is free and touching
COROLLA TUBE: outer side is blue violet (RHS N89C)

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLELE12095' was bred and developed by the breeder, Guido von Tubeuf. It originated from a hybrid cross conducted in September 2008, in Nairobi, Kenya, between a Lobelia designated '077', as the female parent, and a Lobelia designated 'LE 06 0052', as the male parent. From the resulting progeny, seedlings were selected in May 2009, in Stuttgart, Germany, for their flower colour, earliness of flowering, plant vigour and growth habit. These selected seedlings were evaluated in greenhouse trials from February to May 2010, 2011, and 2012, in Stuttgart, Germany, where they were further assessed for earliness of flowering, flower colour, plant uniformity, plant vigour and growth habit. In May 2011, in Stuttgart, Germany, 'KLELE12095' was selected for commercialization.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'KLELE12095' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings that were each transplanted into an 11.5 cm pot on April 13, 2015. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on May 20, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
