Summary: 'Sunmandecrim' has a thinner stem with less pubescence than 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'. The leaf of 'Sunmandecrim' is smaller than 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'. 'Sunmandecrim' has an obovate to oblong shaped leaf while it is more elliptic shaped in 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'. The leaf of 'Sunmandecrim' has weaker margin undulation, pubescence and rugosity than in 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'. 'Sunmandecrim' has a smaller flower diameter than 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'. The flower colour of 'Sunmandecrim' is dark purple-red while it is purple-red in 'Alice Dupont' and white in 'Sunmandeho'. 'Sunmandecrim' has smaller flower petals than 'Alice Dupont' and 'Sunmandeho'.
Description:
'Sunmandecrim' is a mandevilla variety that grows as a climbing vine. The stem is light green in colour, thin, with medium anthocyanin colouration and very sparse or absent pubescence. The leaves are arranged in an opposite fashion, are obovate to oblong in shape with a cuspidate apex and cordate shaped base. There is no variegation on the leaves. The upper side of the leaf is dark green in colour, with no undulation of the margin, rugosity, or pubescence and strong glossiness. The lower side of the leaf is light green in colour with no pubescence.
'Sunmandecrim' produces a racemose type infloresence that is trumpet-shaped with a light green and light red coloured pedicel. The flower colour is a dark purple-red. The flower petals are touching to overlaping, have an entire margin with weak undulation and reflexing. The inner flower tube opening has orange brown streaks blended with orange-red and yellow at the base. The calyx has medium to strong anthocyanin colouration. The anthers are yellow in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunmandecrim' originated from crossing a Mandevilla atroviolacea as the female parent and a Mandevilla amabilis x boliviensis variety 'Sunmandeho' as the male parent in September 1997 at the Omi R & D Centre, Shiga-ken, Japan. In April 1998, 40 seedlings were obtained from that cross and were grown in a greenhouse. One seedling was selected based on its flower colour and flower duration from those seedlings. The seedling was propagated by cuttings and grown in a trial from August 1999 to November 2000 where it was evaluated.
Tests & Trials: Trials were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 21 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Three rooted cuttings were transplanted into 3 gallon containers giving 7 containers per variety with the exception of 'Alice Dupont' with three containers. Observations and measurements were taken from ten plants of each variety. All colour measurements were made using RHS Colour Chart 2001.
