Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Fisrix Dered' (Rio Deep Red)

Summary: The stem of 'MANZ0002' has a longer internode than that of 'Fisrix Dered'. The petiole of 'MANZ0002' has no anthocyanin colouration while the petiole of 'Fisrix Dered' has a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The pedicel of 'MANZ0002' is longer than that of 'Fisrix Dered'. The main colour of the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'MANZ0002' is dark purple red whereas the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'Fisrix Dered' is dark purple red aging to lighter purple red. The basal half of the outer side of the corolla throat of 'MANZ0002' is white whereas it is yellow green for 'Fisrix Dered'. The distal half of the outer side of the corolla throat of 'MANZ0002' is dark purple red whereas it is purple red to blue pink for 'Fisrix Dered'. The outer side of the corolla tube of 'MANZ0002' is yellow green while that of 'Fisrix Dered' is dark pink red with undertones of yellow green.

LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): light to medium green, no pubescence

PEDICEL: light green, no anthocyanin colouration, no pubescence
CALYX: light green on basal half, mostly light green on distal half with light red at tips only
FLOWER BUD: trullate shape, dark purple red (RHS 46A) with darker purple red (RHS 187B) at tip along edges
FLOWER: single type
COROLLA LOBE: strongly asymmetric, acuminate apex, medium recurving of margin with strong recurving occurring with age, medium undulation of margin, inner side is dark purple red (RHS 185A), distal part is concave in longitudinal section

Origin & Breeding History: 'MANZ0002' originated from a controlled cross conducted in the summer of 2007 in Hillscheid, Germany, between the female parent variety 'Fisrix Whit' and the male parent variety 'K04-1263-32'. The new variety was bred and developed by the breeder Birgit Hofmann, of Ruedesheim, Germany. In December 2010, the new variety 'MANZ0002' was selected as a single seedling from the resulting progeny of the above-stated cross in Gilroy, California, U.S.A. based on its plant growth habit, flower colour, flower size and foliage quality. 'MANZ0002' was first asexually reproduced by cuttings in January 2011 in Gilroy, California, U.S.A.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'MANZ0002' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2018 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on May 25, 2018. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on August 17, 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
