Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Fisrix Pinka' (Rio Pink)

Summary: The stem of 'MANZ0003' has a longer internode than the stem of 'Fisrix Pinka'. The leaf apex of 'MANZ0003' is acuminate while it is cuspidate and acute for 'Fisrix Pinka'. The corolla of 'MANZ0003' is larger in diameter than the corolla of 'Fisrix Pinka'. When fully opened, the main colour of the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'MANZ0003' is purple red with darker purple red at the tip whereas the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'Fisrix Pinka' is darker purple red. When aged, the main colour of the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'MANZ0003' is light blue pink whereas the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'Fisrix Pinka' is purple red with blue pink to light blue pink tones. The corolla tube of 'MANZ0003' is longer than the corolla tube of 'Fisrix Pinka'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'MANZ0003' originated from a controlled cross conducted in the summer of 2007 in Hillscheid, Germany, between the female parent variety 'Fisrix Whit' and the male parent variety 'K04-1263-32'. The new variety was bred and developed by the breeder Birgit Hofmann, of Ruedesheim, Germany. In December 2010, the new variety 'MANZ0003' was selected as a single seedling from the resulting progeny of the above-stated cross in Gilroy, California, U.S.A. based on its plant growth habit, flower colour, flower size and foliage quality. 'MANZ0003' was first asexually reproduced by cuttings in January 2011 in Gilroy, California, U.S.A.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'MANZ0003' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2018 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on May 25, 2018. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on August 17, 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
