Summary: The stem of 'MANZ0023' has a longer internode than that of ‘Madinia Deep Red'. The leaf blade of 'MANZ0023' is longer than that of ‘Madinia Deep Red'. The flower bud of 'MANZ0023' is dark purple red at the top and middle and light yellow green at the base whereas that of ‘Madinia Deep Red' is medium purple red at the top, dark blue pink at the middle and light yellow at the base. The corolla of 'MANZ0023' is larger in diameter than that of ‘Madinia Deep Red'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'MANZ0023' originated from a controlled cross conducted in April 2013 between two proprietary seedlings, the female parent designated as ‘DIP-252' and the male parent designated as ‘DIP-059' in Gilroy, California, USA. In January 2016, 'MANZ0023' was selected as a single seedling from the resulting progeny based on its plant growth habit, foliage colour, flowering period, flower size and flower colour in Gilroy, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'MANZ0023' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2024 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 29, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on August 6, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
