PLANT: medium to tall
STEM: short to medium length (including inflorescence), grey
LEAF: medium green, no stripes, erect attitude, medium width of base, yellow autumn colouration
INFLORESCENCE: mainly violet with a white hue shortly before opening, sparse
Origin & Breeding History: 'NCMS1' originated from a controlled cross conducted in September 2007 in Mills River, North Carolina, USA. The cross was conducted between the female parent, an artificially induced tetraploid hybrid coded 'H2008-024-001', and the male parent, the diploid variety 'Zebrinus'. The initial selection was made in October 2008. 'NCMS1' was micropropagated and divided at North Carolina State University's Mountain Horticulture Crops Research Station in Mills River, North Carolina, USA over a seven year period. This variety was selected based on its genome size, infertility, culm habit, leaf blade attitude, growth habit and inflorescence appearance.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'NCMS1' is based on the UPOV Report of Technical Examination, application number 2017/1897, purchased from Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hannover, Germany from 2018 to 2019.
