LEAF: alternate arrangement, linear shape, acute apex, entire margin with inconspicuous short bristles, moderately concave in cross-section, variegation present, glabrous, upper and lower sides predominantly dark green with bands of light yellow (RHS 10C), midrib and parallel veins white (RHS NN155C)

Origin & Breeding History: 'NCMS2B' originated from a controlled cross conducted in September 2011 at Mills River, North Carolina, USA. The cross was conducted between the female parent, an artificially induced tetraploid hybrid, and the male parent, a diploid, both derived from seed of an open pollinated cross of Miscanthus sinensis 'Little 'Zebra'. The initial selection was made in October 2012. 'NCMS2B' was micropropagated and divided at North Carolina State University's Mountain Horticulture Crops Research Station in Mills River, North Carolina, USA over a four year period. This variety was selected based on its compact and upright growth habit, triploid cytotype and yellow horizontal bands.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'NCMS2B' was conducted in an outdoor container trial during the summer of 2017 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 15 cm containers on June 1, 2017. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on September 5, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
