Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Ace', 'AC Pennant' and 'Andante'
Summary: 'AAC Adagio' has a longer leaf than 'Andante'. The petiole of 'AAC Adagio' is longer than that of the reference varieties. When all branches are raised vertically, the total plant length of 'AAC Adagio' is longer than that of 'Ace'. The silique of 'AAC Adagio' is shorter than that of 'AC Pennant'.
Description:
PLANT: open pollinated, diploid, erect growth habit, medium height at flowering, flowers mid-season
SEEDLING: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on stem
STEM: medium thickness
LEAF: narrow to wide elliptic, medium number of lobes, medium green, acute to intermediate apex, undulating to sharp margin, medium depth dentations, weak to medium glaucosity, sparse to medium density of pubescence
FLOWER STALK: medium-strong branching
PETALS: yellow, medium to long, medium-broad to broad
SILIQUE: horizontal attitude, medium width, medium length, medium length beak, medium long pedicel
SEED: medium number per silique, medium to large, round, yellow
AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: fair to good resistance to lodging
QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS: no allyl isothiocyanate content, 41.7% erucic acid content in total fatty acid profile
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Adagio' (experimental designation 'YM08-YCMO') originated from the cross between a yellow mustard breeding line, SA00-PYM, and five brown-seeded accessions (SRS 2778, SRS 2779, SRS 2781, SRS 2783 and SRS 2784) conducted in 2004 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Saskatoon Research Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The F1 hybrid plants were bud-pollinated to produce F2 seeds. In the F2 generation, 240 plants were bud-pollinated to produce F3 seeds. About 1000 F3 yellow seeds produced from 60 F2 plants were bulked and grown in isolation in the field in 2005. The resulting population was used as the base population for breeding yellow mustard with high mucilage content. 'AAC Adagio' was developed from the base population via two cycles of recurrent selection for high mucilage content. The variety was evaluated from 2009 to 2012 as part of the Mustard Cooperative Tests under the experimental designation 'YM08-YCMO'.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Adagio' were grown during the summers of 2014 and 2015 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Saskatoon Research Farms in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots were arranged in a RCB design with 4 replicates of each variety in each year of test. Each 7.2 metre squared replicated plot consisted of 4 rows with a row spacing of 30 centimetres, a length of 6 metres and a width of 1.2 metres. The planting density was 140 seeds per square metre of plot. The measured characteristics were based on 60 measurements per plant or parts of plants per variety. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
