Origin & Breeding History: 'POIPD2' originated from a cross conducted in June 2005, in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. The cross was made between the female parent, Physocarpus opulifolius var. intermedius f. parvifolius, and pollen from the male parent, a proprietary selection coded 'D#2'. The new variety 'POIPD2' was selected in May 2008, in Grand Haven based on its plant habit, leaf colour, leaf size and disease tolerance. Asexual reproduction of 'POIPD2' was first conducted by softwood cuttings in the summer of 2008 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'POIPD2' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the spring and summer of 2016 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown in 11.3 litre containers, planted on July 13, 2015 from 10 cm rooted liners. The trial was arranged outdoors in rows with approximately 1 meter spacing between the plants. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 pants or parts of plants from each variety on June 1, 2016. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
