Origin & Breeding History: UMNHarpell' originated from an open pollinated cross conducted in Donald, Oregon, USA in the spring of 2002. The cross took place among a collection of Physocarpus plants that included the variety Center Glow' and several proprietary seedlings which were previously derived from the varieties Monlo' and Dart's Gold'. The collected seed was sown and the new variety UMNHarpell' was selected as a single plant in the spring of 2003 based on plant habit, growth rate, foliage colour and disease characteristics. Asexual reproduction by softwood cuttings was first conducted in the summer of 2004.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of UMNHarpell' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2018/2155, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office, Angers, France. The trials were conducted at the Zaklad Doswiadczalny Oceny Odmian (ZDOO) testing station in Srem, Poland from 2019 to 2020. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
