Origin & Breeding History: 'ZLENatalie' originated from a hybrid cross conducted between the female parent variety ‘Donna May' and the male parent variety ‘Dart's Gold' in Edina, Minnesota in 2011. Twelve F1 resulting seedlings were allowed to open pollinate in June 2014. The resulting F2 seeds were collected, bulked and sown indoors in 2014 and 2015. Seedlings of ‘ZLENatalie' were selected in 2016 for their plant growth habit, foliage colour, foliage size and powdery mildew resistance. Asexual reproduction of ‘ZLENatalie' by softwood cuttings was first conducted in 2016 in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of ‘ZLENatalie' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2024 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 8 shrubs of the candidate variety and 10 shrubs of the reference varieties. All shrubs were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 13.5 litre containers in the summer of 2023. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 shrubs or parts of shrubs of each variety on July 27, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
