Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Esker', 'HiFi' and 'Vista'
Summary: The leaf colour of 'X8787-1' is medium green whereas it is light green for 'HiFi'. The frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is high for 'X8787-1' whereas it is medium for 'HiFi' and low for 'Vista'. The pubescence/hairiness above and below the upper culm node of 'X8787-1' is dense whereas it is medium for 'Esker' and sparse for 'Vista'. The plant height of 'X8787-1' is shorter than the reference varieties.
Description:
PLANT: hulled spring type, semi-erect juvenile growth habit, absent to very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheath and lower leaf blade, high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves
STEM: dense pubescence above and below the upper culm node
LEAF: medium green, absent to very sparse pubescence of margin, weak glaucosity
PANICLE: intermediate orientation, very lax density, drooping attitude of branches, more than 45 degree angle between dominant side branch and rachis, few short hairs or spines on lowest node
SPIKELET: semi-abscission separation, nodding attitude, 2 grains
RACHILLA: long between primary and secondary floret, sparse pubescence
GLUME: weak glaucosity
LEMMA: weak glaucosity, small extent of lateral overlap on palea, yellow at maturity, absent to very sparse density of pubescence on lateral and dorsal surface, absent to very weak tendency to be awned
KERNEL: basal hairs absent, yellow
SCUTELLUM: rounded
AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTIC: poor lodging resistance
Origin & Breeding History: 'X8787-1' originated from the cross 'X7535-9'/'X7395-4' made in the spring of 1998 in the greenhouses of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, USA. In 1998, the F1 plants were field-grown and a pedigreed method of breeding was followed. Individual panicles were selected from the F2 through F5 generations and selected primarily for crown rust resistance, yield and high grain quality. In the 2003, all plants of the F6 were cut, threshed in bulk and tested as selection 'X8787-1'. From 2004 to 2012, 'X8787-1' was evaluated in yield and advanced performance trials. Additional selection criteria included high yield, test weight, high percentage Beta glucan, straw strength, resistance to crown rust and tolerance to barley yellow dwarf virus.
Tests & Trials: Trials for 'X8787-1' were conducted during the 2014 growing season at AgQuest (Manitoba) Inc. Research Station in Minto, Manitoba. A two replicate design was planted using plots measuring approximately 6 metres by 1 metre with 6 rows per plot spaced 20 cm between rows. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements from one year of data. Results were supported by the official technical examination report purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Beltsville, Maryland, U.S.A. Plant Variety Protection Office number 201200097.
