Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Kara', 'Kyron', 'Nice' and 'Pomona'

Summary: At booting, the pubescence of the margin on the leaf below the flag leaf is sparse for 'Bolina' whereas the pubescence of the margin is of medium density for 'Kara'. The degree of glaucosity of the leaf is weak for 'Bolina' whereas the degree of glaucosity is strong for 'Kara'. The frequency of plants with a recurved flag leaf is weak to medium for 'Bolina' whereas the frequency is medium to strong for 'Kyron' and absent or very weak to weak for 'Pomona'. Shortly after heading at the green stage, the plants of 'Bolina' are shorter than the plants of 'Kyron', 'Nice' and 'Pomona'. The panicle of 'Bolina' is shorter than the panicle of 'Kyron', 'Nice' and 'Pomona'. The tendency of the lemma to be awned is absent or very weak for 'Bolina' whereas the tendency is medium for 'Kara', strong for 'Kyron' and strong to very strong for 'Nice'. The 1000 kernel weight of 'Bolina' is lighter than the 1000 kernel weight of 'Kara', 'Kyron', 'Nice' and 'Pomona'.

Description:

PLANT: hulled winter type, weak to medium frequency with recurved flag leaves
YOUNG PLANT: intermediate between semi-erect and semi-prostrate growth habit

LOWER LEAF: absent or very sparse pubescence of sheath and blade
LEAF: medium green, sparse pubescence of margins of leaf below flag leaf, weak glaucosity at green stage

UPPER CULM NODE: dense pubescence of stem above and below node

PANICLE: equilateral/symmetrical orientation of branches, medium density, semi-erect to horizontal attitude of branches, 30 to 45 degree angle between rachis and dominant side branch
LOWEST PANICLE NODE: no hairs or spines
GLUME: medium degree of glaucosity
LEMMA: no glaucosity, small to medium degree of lateral overlap on palea, cream colour at maturity, absent or very sparse pubescence of lateral and dorsal surfaces, absent or very weak tendency to be awned
SPIKELET: abscission type separation, nodding attitude, two kernels
RACHILLA: short to medium distance between primary and secondary floret, glabrous

KERNEL: light brown, very few basal hairs, basal hairs are short

Origin & Breeding History: 'Bolina' (experimental designation 'C3M13001') originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2002 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. From the resulting progeny, selections were made at the F2, F3, F4, F5, F6 and F7 generations with the establishment of seed taking place at the F9 generation. 'Bolina' was selected in 2006 at the F6 generation for its short and strong straw, yield, kernel quality and resistance to Crown rust (Puccinia coronata). The production of seed began with the F9 generation.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Bolina' were conducted during 2016 and 2017 in the Champ Techno 5 at La Coop Fédérée, in Saint-Hyacinthe, Québec. Each trial consisted of 3 replications per variety distributed in a randomized complete block design and covering a plot size of 7.5 square metres. Each replicate consisted of a 5 m long row and the rows were spaced 0.38 m apart. The seeding density was such that it resulted in a total of over 3000 plants per variety. The measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements in 2016 and a minimum of 21 measurements in 2017. The mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
