Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Dancer', 'CDC Norseman' and 'Summit'

Summary: At booting, the flag leaf of 'CDC Endure' is wider than that of 'CDC Norseman' and 'Summit'. The pubescence on the stem above and below the upper culm node of 'CDC Endure' is of absent to very sparse density whereas it is sparse for that of 'CDC Dancer' and medium to dense for that of 'Summit'. The plants of 'CDC Endure' head later than those of 'Summit'. After heading at the green stage, the plants of 'CDC Endure' are shorter than those of 'CDC Dancer' and 'CDC Norseman'. The lemma of 'CDC Endure' has medium glaucosity while that of 'Summit' has absent to weak glaucosity. 'CDC Endure' has a longer panicle than 'CDC Norseman' and 'Summit'. At maturity, the pubescence on the rachilla of 'CDC Endure' is of absent or very sparse density whereas it is of sparse to medium density for that of 'Summit'. The lower glume of 'CDC Endure' is longer than that of 'CDC Dancer' and 'Summit'. The tendency of the lemmas to be awned on 'CDC Endure' is absent to weak whereas the lemmas on 'CDC Norseman' have a weak to strong tendency to be awned. The kernel weight of 'CDC Endure' is greater than that of the reference varieties. The kernel of 'CDC Endure' is longer than that of 'CDC Dancer' and 'Summit'.

Description:

PLANT: hulled spring type, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves

SEEDLING (5 to 9 tiller stage): semi-erect to intermediate juvenile growth habit, absent or very sparse pubescence of lower leaf sheath and blade

LEAF (at booting): medium to dark green, absent to very sparse pubescence on margin of leaf below flag leaf, medium intensity of glaucosity at green stage

STEM: absent to very sparse pubescence above and below upper culm node

PANICLE (shortly after heading): equilateral/symmetrical orientation of branches, lax to medium density, semi-erect attitude of branches, less than 30 degrees to between 30 to 45 degree angle between rachis and dominant side branch
LOWEST PANICLE NODE: absent to a medium number of short hairs or spines
SPIKELET: fracture type separation of lower florets, nodding attitude, two kernels
RACHILLA: medium to long distance between primary and secondary florets, medium to long grooves, absent or very sparse pubescence
GLUME: weak glaucosity
LEMMA: medium glaucosity, medium extent of lateral overlap on palea, white at maturity, absent to very sparse pubescence of lateral and dorsal surfaces, absent to weak tendency to be awned

KERNEL (primary kernels from upper spikelets): cream colour
SCUTELLUM: pointed tip, medium sized
GROAT: medium to dense pubescence

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to lodging, day length sensitive

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Black loose smut (Ustilago avenae races A13, A60 and A617); moderately resistant to Crown rust (Puccinia coronata races CR13, CR223, CR241, CR249, CR254, CR257, CR258 and CR259) and susceptible to Stem rust (Puccinia graminis races NA8, NA16, NA25, NA27, NA28 and NA67)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Endure' (experimental designations OT3087 and SA120157) originated from a cross between 'OT590' and 'CDC Dancer' conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2008. The F1 generation was grown in a bulk population during the winter of 2008 and 2009 in a Saskatoon greenhouse. The F2 generation was bulked in Saskatoon in 2009, while the F3 generation was sent to New Zealand's winter nursery and bulked in the winter of 2009 and 2010. During the summer of 2010, the F4 generation was space planted in Saskatoon. Individual panicles were harvested and selected for general seed characteristics and grown in the field as F5 hill plots in 2011 in Saskatoon. The seed from the selected F5 hill plot was bulked as the line SA120157. Further testing was conducted from 2012 to 2014 in Crop Development Centre yield trials and the Western Canadian Cooperative Oat Registration trials as OT3087 in 2015 and 2016. Selection criteria included Beta-glucan and oil content, groat percentage, kernel weight, kernel size, percentage of thin seeds, yield, lodging resistance and crown rust resistance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'CDC Endure' were conducted in 2018 and 2019 at the Crop Science Field Laboratory, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A four replicate randomized complete block design was planted each year consisting of 5 rows per plot, with a seeding error requiring the removal of the 5th row of various plots in 2019. Plots were 4.5 square metres with a density of 215 plants per square metre, with 3.66 metre long rows spaced 0.2 metres apart. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 24 measurements per variety per year, except kernel weight, which was based on 20 measurements in 2018 and 10 measurements in 2019. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
