Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Bullet' and 'Bolina'

Summary: At the 5 to 9 tiller stage, the juvenile growth habit of 'AAC Stature' is intermediate while that of 'Bolina' is semi-erect. At booting, the leaf of 'AAC Stature' is medium green while that of 'AAC Bullet' is dark green. At the green stage, the leaf of 'AAC Stature' has medium glaucosity while that of 'Bolina' has weak glaucosity. The flag leaf of 'AAC Stature' is shorter than that of 'AAC Bullet'. The plants of 'AAC Stature' are shorter than those of 'AAC Bullet' and 'Bolina'. The panicle of 'AAC Stature' is shorter than those of 'AAC Bullet' and 'Bolina'. The lower glume of 'AAC Stature' has medium to strong glaucosity while those of 'AAC Bullet' and 'Bolina' have weak to medium glaucosity. At maturity, the lower glume of 'AAC Stature' is shorter than the lower glume of 'AAC Bullet'. The lemma of 'AAC Stature' has a weak tendency to be awned whereas that of 'Bolina' has a medium tendency to be awned.

Description:

PLANT: spring hulled type, intermediate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves at booting

STEM: dense pubescence above the upper culm node, medium pubescence below the upper culm node

LOWER LEAF: absent or very sparse pubescence on sheath and blade
LEAF: medium green, absent to very sparse pubescence on margin of leaf below flag leaf, medium glaucosity at green stage

PANICLE: equilateral/symmetrical orientation, medium density, semi-erect attitude of branches, less than 30 degree angle between rachis and dominant side branch
SPIKELET: two grains
LEMMA: small extent of lateral overlap on palea, white at maturity, absent to very sparse pubescence on lateral and dorsal surface, weak tendency to be awned

KERNEL (PRIMARY KERNELS FROM UPPER SPIKELETS): basal hairs absent, cream colour
GROAT: medium pubescence

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Stature' (experimental designations 'OA1453-2' and '10W44-1-13') originated from the cross conducted in 2010 between 'Bolina' and the line '04P07B-GN1C' at Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada's Ottawa Research and Development Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. The variety was selected using a modified single seed decent method. The cross was advanced to the F3 generation in the greenhouse. In 2012, 90 individual F3 plants were tested in a hill nursery, and 11 F4 plants were selected based on plant height, maturity, resistance to crown rust, and kernel characteristics. In 2013, these lines were included in an observation nursery where 2 lines were visually selected for inclusion in the Home Test in 2014. '10W44-1-13' was seeded as a long strip and selected based on stature, oat crown rust resistance as well as kernel uniformity. This line was renamed 'OA1453-2' and entered into Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada's Ottawa Research and Development Centre's Oat Registration trials in 2016 to 2018. Simultaneously in 2015, 50 panicles were harvested from seed plots and grown as separate hills in 2016. Twenty of these hills were harvested, 10 of which were included in observation plots in 2017. In 2018, 8 lines were used to grow pre-breeder seed with the harvested seed being bulked and used to produce Breeder Seed in 2019.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Stature' were conducted at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada Ottawa Research and Development Centre in Ottawa, Ontario in 2019 and 2021. There were 4 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each replicate consisted of six 3.8 metre long rows with 18 centimetre inter-row spacing. The seeding density was 330 seeds per metre squared resulting in a minimum of 5016 plants per variety. The measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. The mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
