Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Arborg' and 'CS Camden'

Summary: At the 5-9 tiller stage, the plants of ‘AAC Fetch' have a semi-erect growth habit while the plants of ‘CS Camden' have an erect growth habit. The pubescence of the lower leaf sheath of ‘AAC Fetch' is absent or very sparse whereas that of ‘CDC Arborg' is medium density. At booting, the leaves of ‘AAC Fetch' have a medium intensity of glaucosity while the leaves of the reference varieties have weak glaucosity. After heading at the green stage, the plants of ‘AAC Fetch' are shorter than those of ‘CDC Arborg' and taller than those of ‘CS Camden'.

Description:

PLANT: hulled spring type, semi-erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves at booting

STEM: absent or very sparse pubescence above and below upper culm node

LOWER LEAF: absent to very sparse pubescence on sheath and blade at the 5 to 9 tiller stage
LEAF (AT BOOTING): dark green, absent or very sparse pubescence on margin of leaf below flag leaf, medium glaucosity at green stage

PANICLE (SHORTLY AFTER HEADING): equilateral/symmetrical orientation of branches, medium density, semi-erect to horizontal attitude of branches
SPIKELET: two to three grains
LEMMA: white at maturity, absent or very sparse pubescence on lateral and dorsal surface, medium tendency to be awned

KERNEL: short basal hairs, cream
GROAT: medium density of pubescence
SCUTELLUM: pointed tip, medium size

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good lodging resistance

Origin & Breeding History: ‘AAC Fetch' (experimental designation ‘OT2148', ‘16P08-BN27C09') originated from a cross conducted between ‘CDC Arborg' and a line designated as ‘OT2107' at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Brandon Research and Development Centre in Brandon, Manitoba in 2016. It was selected using a modified bulk breeding strategy followed by pedigreed method at a later stage. Early generation selection and advancements tool place between Brandon, Manitoba and Palmerston North, New Zealand. F8 lines were entered into yield tests in 2021 and 2022. Selection was based on improved agronomic performance, disease resistance and nutritional quality traits. Breeder seed was established at the F12 generation in 2024.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘AAC Fetch' were conducted at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Brandon Research and Development Centre in Brandon, Manitoba in the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. The trials were conducted using a RCB design consisting of 4 replications per variety. Each plot consisted of 5 rows spaced 18 cm apart, with a row length of 5 metres. The planting density of 300 seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 4260 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
