Summary: 'Pink Ruffles' produces a smaller plant with smaller leaves than 'Cedar Hill'. The peduncle is shorter in 'Pink Ruffles' than in 'Cedar Hill'. 'Pink Ruffles' has a larger flower diameter than 'Cedar Hill'. The flower colour of 'Pink Ruffles' is a darker pink than 'Cedar Hill'. 'Pink Ruffles' has a bigger entire type of blotch on the petal while 'Cedar Hill' has a band type blotch. The flower petal of 'Pink Ruffles' has a laciniate type incision, while 'Cedar Hill' has a flower petal with no incision. 'Pink Ruffles' has a violet coloured filament, while 'Cedar Hill' has a white one. The anthers of 'Pink Ruffles' are a blackish colour while 'Cedar Hill' has more violet coloured anthers.
Description:
'Pink Ruffles' is a perennial that has an upright bushy growth habit with a sparse degree of branching. It is vegetatively propagated. The stem is a medium green colour with no anthocyanin colouration. The stem has no glaucosity with medium to dense pubescence. The leaf is a simple type arranged alternately along the stem and at the base in a rosette arrangement. The leaf is oblanceolate in shape, with an acute shaped apex. The margin of the leaf blade is lobed. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour with no variegation and medium pubescence. There is no petiole present. The peduncle has no anthocyanin colouration.
'Pink Ruffles' flowers once early in the season for a short amount of time. The simple type flower is found terminally with an erect attitude. The rounded shaped flower petals are overlapping to very overlapping and few in number. The main colour of the upper side of the flower petal is orange/red. The petal has an entire type blotch which is dark purple/red in colour. The flower petal has laciniate type incisions. The filament is a dark violet colour while the anthers are a blackish colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Pink Ruffles' is a sport or mutation out of Papaver orientale 'Garden Glory'. The discovery was made by the breeder in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands in 1996. Selection criteria was improved form/habit and floral traits.
Tests & Trials: Trials were conducted for 'Pink Ruffles' during the summer of 2002, at Oxford Station, Ontario. Trials consisted of ten plants of each variety grown in field plots spaced approximately 0.4 metres within the row and 1.0 metre between the rows. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements unless indicated otherwise.
