Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Wildside' (Sunscape Daisy Wildside)

Summary: 'Osoutis' differs from the reference variety 'Wildside' primarily in plant height, foliage length, ray floret colour, width and reflexing of the tips, disc floret colour and maturity. The plants of 'Osoutis' are medium in height whereas the plants of 'Wildside' are medium to tall. The leaves of 'Osoutis' are short whereas they are medium in length in 'Wildside'. The ray florets of 'Osoutis' are more of a true purple than those of 'Wildside' which are more red -purple. The ray florets of 'Osoutis' are narrow whereas they are wide in 'Wildside'. There is very slight reflexing of the tips of the ray florets of 'Osoutis' whereas it is medium to strong in 'Wildside'. The disc florets of 'Osoutis' are purple whereas they are light blue in 'Wildside'. Plants of 'Osoutis' begin to flower very early to early whereas they flower mid-season in 'Wildside'.

Description:

'Osoutis' is a very early flowering Osteospermum variety with an erect to semi-erect growth habit. The medium green leaves have no variegation and very weak lobing. The flowers of 'Osoutis' are borne on a medium to long peduncle with one or two complete rows of ray florets with incomplete ray floret whorls absent. The ray florets are purple and are elliptic in shape with very slight reflexing of the tips. The main colour of the lower side of the ray florets is red-violet. The disc florets are purple.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Osoutis' arose as the result of a cross of the proprietary seedlings, 'C298'( female parent), with 'C273' (male parent) conducted in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands in 1998. Selection criteria included plant growth habit and vigour, flower colour, shape and size, and plant maturity.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Osoutis' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the spring of 2004. The trials consisted of fifteen plants of each variety, planted in 11 cm pots. Observations and measured characteristics were taken from 10 plants. Colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
