Summary: 'KLEO03103' differs from the reference variety, 'Highside', in maturity, ray floret width and colour and reflexing of the ray floret tips. The plants of 'KLEO03103' flower mid-season whereas they flower mid to late season in 'Highside'. The ray florets of 'KLEO03103' are wide to very wide whereas they are medium to wide in 'Highside'. The ray florets of 'KLEO03103' are a lighter red-purple than those of 'Highside'. The main colour of the lower side of the ray florets of 'KLEO03103' is brown violet whereas it is blue violet in 'Highside'. The tips of the ray florets of 'KLEO03103' are slightly reflexing whereas they are medium to strongly reflexing in 'Highside'.
Description:
'KLEO03103' is a mid-season flowering Osteospermum variety with an erect to semi-erect growth habit. The medium green leaves have no variegation with weak lobing. The flowers of 'KLEO03103' have one or two complete rows of ray florets with incomplete ray floret whorls present. The ray florets are light red-purple and elliptic and spatulate in shape with slight reflexing of the tips. The main colour of the lower side of the ray florets is brown-violet. The disc florets are light blue.
Origin & Breeding History: 'KLEO03103' arose as the result of a controlled crossing of the seedlings, 'A024' (female parent) and an unnamed seedling conducted in Stuttgart, Germany in the spring of 2000. The variety was selected for its compact growth habit, flower colour and disease resistance and hardiness.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'KLEO03103' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the spring of 2004. The trials consisted of fifteen plants of each variety, planted in 11 cm pots. Observations and measured characteristics were taken from 10 plants. Colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
