Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: ‘Brightside' (Sunscape Daisy Brightside)

Summary: ‘KLEO03106' differs from the reference variety, ‘Brightside', in plant height, leaf length and width, degree of lobing and ray floret length. The plants of ‘KLEO03106' are tall whereas they are medium to tall in ‘Brightside'. The leaves of ‘KLEO03106' are long and wide with medium lobing whereas they are medium in both length and width with weak lobing in ‘Brightside'. The ray florets of ‘KLEO03106' are short to medium in length whereas they are medium in ‘Brightside'. The main colour of the lower side of the ray floret of ‘KLEO03106' is light purple whereas it is blue violet in ‘Brightside'.

Description:

‘KLEO03106' is a mid-season flowering Osteospermum variety with an erect to semi-erect growth habit. The medium green leaves have no variegation with medium to strong degree of lobing. The flowers of ‘KLEO03106' have one or two complete rows of ray florets with incomplete ray floret whorls present. The ray florets are white and spatulate in shape with very weak reflexing of the tips. The main colour of the lower side of the ray florets is light purple. The disc florets are medium blue.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘KLEO03106' arose as the result of a controlled crossing of the seedlings, ‘SA 001 and CD 010' conducted in Stuttgart, Germany in June, 1999. The variety was selected in 2000 for its compact growth habit, flower colour, disease resistance and hardiness.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for ‘KLEO03106' were conducted in a polyhouse at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario during the spring of 2004. The trials consisted of fifteen plants of each variety, planted in 11 cm pots. Observations and measured characteristics were taken from 10 plants. Colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
