Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Brightside' and 'Osjamwhit' (Jamboana White Improved)

Summary: 'Balserwibli' is an osteospermum variety that is taller than 'Osjamwhit'. The major difference, however, between 'Balserwibli' and the two reference varieties is that the candidate has spatulate (spoon shaped) ray florets and 'Brightside' and 'Osjamwhit' have oblanceolate ray florets. The varieties also differ in the main colour of the lower side of the ray floret. 'Balserwibli' is red-brown at the apex, changing to purple at the base. 'Brightside' is violet-blue with greyed purple stripes. 'Osjamwhit' is purple with red-brown stripes on the lower side.

Description:

'Balserwibli' is an osteospermum variety which has erect shoots and dark green leaves with no variegation and weak lobing. The inflorescences have one or two complete whorls of ray florets and incomplete ray florets whorls are also present. The ray florets are spatulate and white in colour and have a tubular mid-section. The lower side of the ray floret is red brown at the apex, changing to purple at the base. The disc is purple and black.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Balserwibli' originated in a controlled breeding program during August 1999 at Billerbeck, Germany. The female parent was the proprietary selection designated 09-19-98. The male parent was the proprietary selection designated 35-3-99. The initial selection was made in April 2000.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Balserwibli' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included 15 plants of each of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 15 cm pots on March 21, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on May 19, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
