Varieties used for comparison: 'KLEO03104' (FlowerPower Pink + Eye) and 'Seaside'
Summary: 'Oste Pinkbic' is an osteospermum variety which has smaller inflorescences and shorter, narrower ray florets than 'Seaside'. 'Oste Pinkbic' differs from 'KLEO03104' in the amount of secondary colour on the ray florets. The candidate florets fade to white close to the base, whereas 'KLEO03104' has a large white zone that extends from the base up to the middle of the ray floret. The main colour of the ray florets of 'Seaside' are a lighter pink colour than those of 'Oste Pinkbic'. The disc of 'Oste Pinkbic' is blue, while it is purple in 'KLEO03104'.
Description:
'Oste Pinkbic' is an osteospermum variety which has erect shoots and dark green leaves with no variegation and weak lobing. The inflorescences have one or two complete whorls of ray florets and incomplete ray florets whorls are also present. The ray florets are oblanceolate and pink-purple , with a white zone near the base. The lower side of the ray floret is yellow-brown with violet streaks. The disc is blue.
Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Oste Pinkbic' originated in a planned pedigree breeding program in Andjik, The Netherlands. The variety resulted from a cross made in October, 2000. The resultant seed was sown in a greenhouse in June 2001. In October 2001, a single plant was selected by the breeder from the progeny, based on flower colour, form and plant habit.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Oste Pinkbic' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included 15 plants of each of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 15 cm pots on March 21, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on May 19, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
