Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Sunny Martha' and 'Seaside'

Summary: 'Osjamlipur' is an osteospermum variety which is shorter in height with shorter shoots than either reference variety. The ray florets of 'Osjamlipur' are longer than those of 'Sunny Martha' and narrower than the ray florets of 'Seaside'. The colour of the apex of the upper side ray florets of 'Osjamlipur' is more intense than either of the reference varieties. The lower side of the ray florets of 'Osjamlipur' have yellow-green at the apex, which is not present in the reference varieties.

Description:

'Osjamlipur' is an osteospermum variety which has erect shoots and dark green leaves with no variegation and very weak lobing. The inflorescences have one or two complete whorls of ray florets and incomplete ray florets whorls are also present. The ray florets are oblanceolate and pink-purple , with a whitish zone near the base. The lower side of the ray floret is yellow-green at the apex with purple and violet streaks. The disc is dark blue.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Osjamlipur' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder in June 1999. The female parent was identified as 'C298' and the male parent was 'C274'. A single plant was selected by the breeder in April 2000 based on the following criteria: early flowering, branching characteristics, plant habit and vigour.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Osjamlipur' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials included 15 plants of each of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 6 inch pots on March 21, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on May 25, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
