Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: Oxalis bowiei

Summary: 'Amarantha' has slightly shorter, wider petals than Oxalis bowiei. The petals are overlapping to very overlapping for 'Amarantha' while they are touching for Oxalis bowiei.

Description:

'Amarantha' is a vegetatively reproduced, perennial oxalis variety. 'Amarantha' has a spreading/trailing growth habit. The trifoliate leaves are obovate to orbicular in shape with a retuse shaped apex and attenuate shaped base. The leaf margins are entire. The upper side of the leaf blade has no pubescence and the lower side has sparse pubescence. There is no glaucosity on the upper side of the leaf blade. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour and there is no leaf variegation. The petiole has no anthocyanin.

'Amarantha' flowers early in the season and flowers once for a short period of time. The inflorescence is an umbel and is terminal in position. The inflorescence has an erect attitude. There are five petals which are overlapping to very overlapping. The petals are fused at the base into a very short salverform corolla. The petals have an obtuse shaped apex and have no pubescence on the upper side. The petal are blue pink in colour on the upper and lower side (RHS 68A and RHS 68B respectively).

Origin & Breeding History: 'Amarantha' was selected by the breeder in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands is 1998. The new variety was found in a garden bed between common Oxalis bowiei plants. The new variety was selected on the basis of its larger and stronger plant size, unique floral and foliage characteristics and its ease of propagation.

Tests & Trials: 'Amarantha' was tested at Oxford Station, Ontario in the spring of 2004. The trial included 12 plants per variety which were grown indoors in 10 cm pots. All colour characteristics were determined using the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart (1995 green box edition) and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
