Summary: The leaves of 'Hanareum' are longer and wider than those of 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The shape of the base of the leaf blade of 'Hanareum' is obtuse whereas that of 'Ar-Ri-Rang' is acute. The curvature of the longitudinal axis of the leaf of 'Hanareum' is strong whereas it is weak to medium for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. There are no stipules on the petiole of 'Hanareum' whereas they are present for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The arrangement of the flower petals of 'Hanareum' is touching whereas it is overlapping for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. In longitudinal section, the fruit of 'Hanareum' are strongly asymmetric whereas those of 'Ar-Ri-Rang' are symmetric. The relative area of russet on the cheeks of 'Hanareum' is large to very large whereas it is absent or very small for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The relative area of russet around the stalk attachment of 'Hanareum' is very large whereas it is absent or very small for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The eye basin of the fruit of 'Hanareum' is deep whereas it is very shallow for 'Ar-Ri-Rang'. The time for eating maturity of 'Hanareum' is early to mid-season whereas that of 'Ar-Ri-Rang' is late season.

LEAF: outwards attitude in relation to shoot, large length/width ratio, obtuse base, acute apex, short pointed tip, sharply serrate margin, shallow incisions, strong curvature of longitudinal axis
STIPULES: absent

FLOWER: mainly on spurs, stigma located at same level as stamens
SEPALS: spreading in relation to corolla
PETALS: touching, medium to large, ovate, rounded base, short claw

IMMATURE FRUIT: green sepals in early summer
FRUIT: small to medium length/diameter ratio, position of maximum diameter in middle, medium to large size, strongly asymmetric in longitudinal cross-section, convex profile of sides
SKIN: yellow green ground colour, large amount of yellow over colour, very small area of russet located around eye basin, large to very large area of russet on cheeks, very large area of russet around stalk attachment
STALK: medium to thick, weak curvature, straight in relation to axis of the fruit, medium to deep stalk cavity
EYE BASIN, AT HARVEST: converging attitude of sepals, deep, medium to broad, slightly ribbed relief around eye
FLESH: medium texture, medium firmness, medium to juicy

Origin & Breeding History: 'Hanareum' arose from the cross of 'Niitaka' and 'Chuwhang' made in the spring of 1988 at the National Horticulture Research Institute, Rural Development Adminstration, Suwon, Republic of Korea. It was planted in the field in the spring of 1996 and first selected for its fruit quality, large size and attractive skin colour. From 1997 to 2001, it was tested at 9 sites in regional adaptability tests. The final selection of 'Hanareum' was completed in 2001.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre, Summerland, British Columbia during the 2013 to 2016 growing seasons. Plots consisted of a minimum of 10 trees of each variety with a spacing of 1 meter between trees within the row and 3.5 meters between the rows of trees. The trees were grafted on 'Old Home' rootstock and were originally established during the 2011 growing season. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 10 measurements per variety.
