Summary: The relative area of over colour on the fruit of 'Rode Doyenne Van Doorn' is medium while it is absent or very small for 'Doyenne du Comice' and large for 'Doyenne du Comice Rouge'. The hue of over colour on the fruit of 'Rode Doyenne Van Doorn' is dark red while it is orange red for 'Doyenne du Comice'.

Description:

TREE: strong vigour, medium branching, upright growth habit, begins flowering late, late maturity for consumption

ONE YEAR OLD SHOOT: wavy growth, long internode, medium brown on sunny side, medium number of lenticels
VEGETATIVE BUD: acute apex, slightly held out position in relation to the shoot, large bud support
YOUNG SHOOT: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of growing tip, weak pubescence on upper third

PETIOLE: medium length
STIPULES: short distance from basal attachment of petiole
LEAF BLADE: outwards attitude in relation to shoot, medium length, medium width, medium length/width ratio, truncate base, right-angled apex, short pointed tip, crenate margin, shallow incisions of margin, medium curvature of longitudinal axis

FLOWER BUD: medium length, located mainly on spurs of shoot
SEPAL: medium length, spreading in relation to corolla
PETALS: touching, medium sized, broad ovate, rounded base, short claw
STIGMA: located at same level as stamens

IMMATURE FRUIT: red brown sepals in early summer
FRUIT: medium length, large diameter, small length/diameter ratio, position of maximum diameter slightly towards calyx, large, slightly asymmetric in longitudinal cross-section, profile of sides is straight
SKIN: yellow green ground colour, medium amount of dark red over colour, medium sized area of russet located around eye basin, small area of russet on cheeks, large area of russet around stalk attachment
STALK: short, thick, absent or very weak curvature, oblique attitude in relation to axis of the fruit, medium depth stalk cavity
EYE BASIN, AT HARVEST: sepals erect at harvest, deep, broad, slightly ribbed relief around eye
FLESH: fine texture, soft, very juicy
SEED: elliptic

Origin & Breeding History: 'Rode Doyenne Van Doorn' originated as a spontaneous mutation of Pear variety 'Doyenne du Comice'. It was first discovered by the breeder in Noord Holland, Netherlands in 1992.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Rode Doyenne Van Doorn' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2002/0114, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by Geves at the Institut national de la recherche agronomique in Beaucouzé, France from 2003 to 2008.
