Origin & Breeding History: 'Pegasus' (experimental designation 'PSH26') originated from a hybrid cross between two proprietary parental varieties. Initial breeding of the parental lines began in 1995, using Elsoms material and selecting for root quality characteristics and disease resistances. Following 9 years of single seed decent to genetically fix each of the parental lines, male sterility was introduced into one of the parents by backcrossing to a male sterile line over 8 generations. All breeding took place at Elsoms Seeds, Lincolnshire, UK, including the final cross conducted in 2013 which was followed by several years of screening. In 2017, multiplication of the F1 progeny of 'Pegasus' began with pre-commercial analysis occurring in various locations across the UK and Europe.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description for 'Pegasus' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, CPVO reference number 2020/0121, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office, Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, the Netherlands, in 2020 and 2021. conducted by the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, the Netherlands, in 2020 to 2021.
