Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Carrera'
Summary: The plants of 'Eclipse' are taller with larger stipules than those of 'Carrera'. The peduncle length of 'Eclipse' is longer and pod width is greater than those of 'Carrera'. The seeds of 'Eclipse' are less blocky in shape than those of 'Carrera'.
Description:
'Eclipse' is a spherical to ovoid, smooth, mid to late season yellow field pea variety. The plants are green with no stem fasciation or anthocyanin colouration. The vine is medium to long with no anthocyanin colouration in the stem axils. 'Eclipse' is a semi-leafless pea variety and the stipules have medium waxiness and dentation. Stipule development is normal with medium density of flecking. 'Eclipse' flowers mid-season with a medium number of flower bearing nodes per stem. The flowers are white with the maximum number of flowers per node being two. The shape of the base of the standard is level. The upper calyx lobe is acuminate. The peduncle is medium to long from stem to first flower. Pod parchment is present. The degree of curvature is very weak with a concave seed bearing suture. The green pods are pointed to blunt. Immature seeds are grey green. The dry seeds are medium sized with no black colour of the hilum or wrinkling or dimpling of the cotyledons. The shape of the starch grain of 'Eclipse' is simple.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Eclipse' was developed from the cross '87318-001' X 'Cebeco 1441' made at the Cebeco breeding station in Lelystad, the Netherlands in 1993. In 1994, a single plant was selected, followed by line selection and replicated yield trials. Selection criteria included yield, resistance to disease and lodging and plant height.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Eclipse' were conducted by Alberta Agriculture at Westlock, Alberta during the summers of 1999 and 2000. The varieties were tested in a complete randomized block design consisting of 4 replications per variety. Each plot consisted of 4 rows spaced 28 cm apart, seeded to 6 metre rows and trimmed to 4 metres. Measured characteristics were based on 10 measurements.
